From Pathology to Purpose: Reclaiming Wellness in Psychiatry
January 15–16, 2027 · Wild Dunes Resort · Isle of Palms, South Carolina
The 2027 SCPA Annual Meeting leans toward wellness, not only for the patients we serve, but for the future of psychiatry itself. This year’s program moves beyond pathology to explore how psychiatrists can help patients reclaim health, resilience, meaning, and purpose across the lifespan.
Sessions span advocacy, women’s mental health, holistic approaches to substance use disorders, trauma-informed management of eating disorders, evidence-based sleep interventions, the power of social connection, mentorship, and the integral role of art in psychiatry. Looking ahead, faculty will explore AI and emerging technologies in clinical practice; new frontiers in treatment, including neuromodulation, new pharmacologic mechanisms of action, and psychedelic therapies; prevention and early detection of cognitive impairment; healthy aging; the evolution from polypharmacy toward precision medicine; and a strengths based approach to neurodivergent patients.
With at least 11 adult psychiatry lectures and 5 child and adolescent psychiatry sessions, the meeting offers a broad, clinically relevant program for psychiatrists, residents, fellows, medical students, and allied medical professionals from across South Carolina.
Together, we will consider not simply how to treat illness, but how psychiatry can help people live… and live well.

Dr. Oliver Fox is a fourth-year and psychiatry resident physician at the Medical University of South Carolina- Charleston division. He is serving as Chief Resident for the academic year. Dr. Fox received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University, and his master’s of science in behavioral and social health sciences from Brown University. Dr. Fox received his MD from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society Honor. He also received the Clinical Scholars Award and Community Service Award- Clinical Years while at Geisinger. Dr. Fox’s interests include mental health policy and how these policies impact care, and he plans on pursuing a fellowship in forensic psychiatry upon completing residency.
Dr. Suzanne Kerns is the owner and medical director of Inner Healing Charleston, an interventional psychiatric practice providing TMS, Spravato®, and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Dr. Kerns completed her general psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in neuromodulation at the Medical University of South Carolina. She has over a decade of clinical and research experience in neuromodulation. She is a past Treasurer and past board member of the Clinical TMS Society. She is honored to be a fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the Clinical TMS Society.
Karen Perlmutter, LISW-CP has worked as a therapist in clinic, hospital, and private practice settings for 20 years. She specializes in the treatment of substance abuse and mental illness, with a particular interest in supporting the entire family system through the complex journey of addiction. She is the owner of Collaborative Counseling, LLC and founder of Empowering Families That Face Addiction™, an online course for families navigating addiction. Karen aims to share education, support and hope with her local and global community through a variety of speaking forums including university campuses, treatment programs, support groups, National Public Radio and professional development events. Notably, her 2022 Tedx Charleston talk was featured by the international TED organization as an “editors pick”. She was a keynote speaker at the 2023 LowCountry Mental Health Conference and presenter at the 2025 Medical University of South Carolina Lawyers and Judges Conference. In 2023, Karen was honored by the Charleston Business Journal as a Woman of Influence.
Dr. Shilpa Srinivasan, MD is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Vice Chair for Medical Staff Affairs- Behavioral Health Midlands and in the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Prisma Health Midlands- University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. She is the Training Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program and Psychiatry Medical Student (M4) clerkship director. She received her medical education at the University of Szeged, Albert Szent Gyorgyi School of Medicine in Szeged, Hungary. She completed general psychiatry residency training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where she served as chief resident. She completed a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Srinivasan’s clinical expertise is in dementia/neurocognitive disorders evaluation and management, mood and anxiety disorders in older adults, geriatric telepsychiatry and curriculum development. She is board-certified in General Psychiatry with subspecialty certification in Geriatric Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
Dr. Srinivasan has held several regional and national leadership roles. She is the President of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), where she served in prior elected office as secretary-treasurer and Board member. She is a board member of the SC Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Dr. Srinivasan received the 2025 AAGP Clinician of the Year Award. She is a recipient of the 2023 Jack Weinberg Memorial Award for Geriatric Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). In 2021 she received the AAGP Educator of the Year Award. Dr. Srinivasan serves as Chair of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Geriatric Psychiatry Article Based Continuing Certification (ABCC) Exam Committee, and is a past recipient of the ABPN Faculty Innovation in Education Award. She is a past president of the South Carolina Psychiatric Association, distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. She was inducted into the American College of Psychiatrists in 2024.
Paige C. Walton, MD, is a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist practicing at Sweetgrass Psychiatry in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Her clinical work focuses on ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and complex comorbid presentations in children, adolescents, and young adults.
She also serves as an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she provides mentorship and education to child and adolescent psychiatry fellows.
Dr. Brianne Mosley is a Psychiatric Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Institute of Psychiatry in Charleston, South Carolina. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Ohio Northern University before completing a PGY1 pharmacy residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency at MUSC. She is double board certified in psychiatric pharmacy and pharmacotherapy.
In her current role, Dr. Mosley provides direct patient care across the MUSC Psychiatric Emergency Department and inpatient psychiatric services. Her clinical and scholarly interests focus on psychiatric pharmacotherapy and the application of emerging evidence to the treatment of complex psychiatric disorders. She has published in peer-reviewed psychiatric and neurologic journals and presented her work at professional conferences.
